The Series 3 Land Rover has many Identification numbers stamped about the vehicle. Although these aren’t really required when ordering parts it is important to know what components are fitted to your vehicle in case they have been changed at some point in its life.  For example if you wanted a front inner hub bearing for your 1975 Series 3 but someone in the past had exchanged the front axle from one off a 1971 model then you might end up with the incorrect part as the bearing changed spec in 1972!

BACK AXLE

The rear axle Identification numbers consisted of a 3 digit Prefix, a serial number and a suffix Letter. The Salisbury rear axle is different in that a typical number would read H74-2345. The letter H indicates the build sanction, 74 refers to the year of manufacturer (in this case 1974) and the remaining digits are a sequential serial number. The identifying pre fixes for the rear axles are the same as for front axles, although the suffixes were as below.

Rear axle Numbers are usually found on the rear left hand side. of the casing.
