The Series 3 Land Rover has many Identification numbers stamped about the vehicle. Although these aren’t really required when ordering parts it is important to know what components are fitted to your vehicle in case they have been changed at some point in its life.  For example if you wanted a front inner hub bearing for your 1975 Series 3 but someone in the past had exchanged the front axle from one off a 1971 model then you might end up with the incorrect part as the bearing changed spec in 1972!

The numbers consisted of a 3 figure type identifier prefix followed by a 5 figure serial number and a suffix number. The prefixes are listed below. Service exchange engines were given an ‘S’ prefix before the 3 figure identifier. Engines classed as 2.25 litre had a 3 main bearing crankshaft whereas the 2.3 litre had a 5 main bearing crankshaft even though they were they same capacity volume wise.

4 Cylinder (Petrol and Diesel) Engine numbers are found towards the front left hand side of the engine stamped into the block under the exhaust manifold
